FreeCongressTrades tracks stock and other asset trades disclosed by members of the U.S. House and Senate under the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act of 2012. Members must file a periodic transaction report for trades over $1,000, generally within 30 days of learning of the trade and never more than 45 days after the trade itself.

What counts

Only House and Senate periodic transaction reports are shown. Executive-branch OGE filings are a different dataset and are deliberately excluded, even though the same data provider serves them. Trades are shown as buys, sells, or exchanges, exactly as filed.

Amounts are ranges, not exact dollars

A report says, for example, $1,001 - $15,000 or $500,001 - $1,000,000. The site never presents a midpoint as the amount traded, and never presents a range as an exact position size. Option trades show the underlying ticker, call or put, and strike where the filing prints them.

Dates and lag

Transaction date and filing date are shown separately and are not interchangeable. A disclosed trade is already weeks old by the time it appears, and the member may have traded again since. Filing delay is shown in days, against the 45-day statutory window.

Data source and attribution

Trades are collected by the Veridion Disclosure API first-party from the House Clerk (disclosures-clerk.house.gov) and Senate eFD (efdsearch.senate.gov), and every row links to its original government filing. Attribution to Veridion is given on the homepage footer and here. Data is reproduced as filed, including occasional filing errors.

Licence caveat - read this before scaling

Veridion's free tier is stated for research, checking, and newsroom use, with attribution required. Its paid tiers state that showing individual rows with attribution is allowed, and that redistribution or resale needs a written agreement. A public, ad-supported site that republishes the full feed may fall outside the free tier's stated use. The long-term fix is to parse the House Clerk PDFs and Senate eFD reports directly from the government systems, which are public records, and to use Veridion only as the seed and cross-check. Do not treat the free API as a permanent, unlimited licence.

Coverage limits

House filings in the v1 feed run through 2026-10-29. Senate filings run through 2026-10-22; Senate eFD collection has been slower since late October 2026, so Senate coverage may lag. Some House reports are scanned paper forms that cannot be machine-read cleanly; the provider's receipt-or-drop method drops rows it cannot tie to a filing, rather than guessing. Not every member trades, and a member with no rows in the current 90-day window may simply not have filed a trade in that window.

Limitations

A disclosed trade is not a recommendation, not a live position, and not evidence of wrongdoing. Trades by a spouse or dependent child are disclosed under the member's name. Nothing on this site is investment advice. Verify every row in its original filing before acting on it.
